NEW YORK – More than $200 million collected from cell phone users for upgrades to the 911 system has been diverted in the last two years to plug state budget holes, keep campaign promises and, in at least one case, buy police uniforms, an Associated Press analysis has found.

Dispatchers say the diversion of money comes at the expense of improvements that would give crime and accident victims more opportunities to reach responders. Someone who has been kidnapped, for instance, may not be able to talk but might be able to quietly send a text message or a photo.

Cell phone subscribers in nearly every state pay anywhere from 20 cents to $1.50 a month for what is described in their bills as 911 improvements . In some states, the AP analysis found, less than half that money is actually going to help emergency dispatchers keep pace with the features of smart phones.

As states hammered by the recession look around for new ways to balance their budgets, the 911 money is tempting:

• In New York, only 19 cents of the $1.20 the state collects from each subscriber each month goes to emergency calling services. The rest pays for uniforms for the state police, a wireless network for emergency responders and the state's general expenditures.

• In Wisconsin, a new 75-cent monthly fee was supposed to pay for ongoing 911 operations and improvements. When the state's deficit grew, the state decided to divert $100 million in the next two years to local governments to reduce pressure to raise property taxes.

• In Arizona, lawmakers funneled $25 million from its emergency telecommunications fund, halving its size, and cut its monthly 911 cell phone fee to 20 cents. As a result, the fund could be out of money within three years.

"The issue of (fund) raiding has been a trickle for a few years, and now we're seeing the faucet on full blast," said Dane Snowden, vice president of external and state affairs at wireless industry group CTIA.

A highly publicized round of call center upgrades is nearly complete, allowing 911 dispatchers to automatically pinpoint cell phone callers. But emergency officials say that's no reason to raid funds set aside for future upgrades. After all, voice calls are just one of many things phones can do.

Dispatchers would like the capability to receive photos, videos and text messages from cell phone users in danger. Photos shot by witnesses with camera phones have already proved useful in catching bank robbers and flashers, for instance. Getting those photos to 911 centers — which could get them to police faster — could help solve crimes.

In several cases in recent years, kidnapping victims have summoned help by surreptitiously sending text messages. But because they can't send directly to 911, they've had to use intermediaries.

When David Deganian and a friend were abducted at gunpoint on an Atlanta street early one morning in 2007, Deganian managed to sneak a text message to his brother Arman: "We have been kidnapped. Please call the police and help us."

Later, the friend tried calling 911. The gunmen heard him, interrupted the call and took the phones away. Luckily, Arman Deganian was awake to notice the text message. He got the police on the case, and they rescued his brother and his friend that afternoon.

In a more famous case, a 14-year-old girl in Kershaw County, S.C., was held in an underground bunker for more than a week before she managed to send a text message to her mother from the captor's phone.

Upgrading call centers to handle text and video messaging would require new computer systems, communications lines and staff training, costing tens of millions of dollars per state, according to the National Emergency Number Association.

A complete accounting of how 911 money is spent in all states is not available, partly because most of the money dispatch centers get is funneled to them by counties. The Federal Communications Commission has been collecting information from the states at the request of Congress, and is expected to report its findings soon.

Oregon, Arizona, Delaware, Hawaii, Wisconsin and Tennessee are among the states that have dipped into their 911 money recently. New York and Rhode Island have been diverting their funds for at least five years. States started collecting the funds in the 1990s.

In the fiscal year that ended in June 2008, Rhode Island collected $19.4 million in 911 fees and used $5.8 million for 911. The rest went to the state's general fund.

Raiding the funds could reduce the money available for 911 upgrades even further, by reducing federal grants. After a round of 911 fund raiding during the previous recession, at the beginning of the decade, the federal government tightened its grant rules to discourage the practice.

To elude the federal government's wagging finger, New York is changing the name of its "Enhanced 911" fee to "Public Safety Communications Surcharge," to make it clearer that 911 is just one of its purposes.

Other states seem to ignore the grants issue.

Oregon collects 75 cents per cell phone per month. Although its attorney general's office concluded that federal laws on 911 grants prohibit using money from wireless bills for purposes other than 911 services, the state took $3 million from an $80 million fund that mingles wireless and landline fees.

"When people pay their bills, they see that they are paying 75 cents per telephone line to fund the 911 system. For the Legislature to turn around and divert some of the money to other purposes is disingenuous. It's just wrong," said Hasina Squires, a lobbyist who represents emergency communications officers in Oregon.

Gov. Ted Kulongoski's office and legislative budget officials defended the decision, citing Oregon's "extraordinary" budget shortfall. They said they took money from various accounts if they determined that doing so wouldn't disrupt core functions of those programs.

Tennessee believes it got around the federal restrictions by leaving the principal in its 911 fund intact and taking out $11 million in accrued interest in the fiscal year that ended June 2008. The fund had $54 million left.

"It begs the question: If you have that much money in holding, why is it still being collected from consumers? It doesn't make any sense," CTIA's Snowden said. "The E911 fund is appearing to be an ATM."

The Nokia E61 is a smartphone from the Eseries range, a Series 60 Third Edition device with a QWERTY keyboard targeting business users in the European market. As of Q4 2006 Cingular and Rogers Wireless have deployed a similar yet restricted version designated the Nokia E62 in the North American and Brazilian markets. The E62 is substantially similar but without an 802.11 WiFi chipset or W-CDMA (UMTS) 3G support. E61 supports 900/1800/1900 bands, while E62 can operate in 850/900/1800/1900 in order to support American networks.
On 12 February 2007 Nokia announced the E61i as a follow up product.

Its kinda weird but out of all of today's announcements I am most excited about one that's just an update. I'm talking about the 3GSM World Congress 2007 and the Nokia E61i.

Yep that "i" means that this phone is an update to last year's highly popular but weirdly sized E61 phone aimed at business users who need Blackberry like push email features and WiFi.

So What's New?

Nokia says the Nokia E61i has a new refreshed sleek design. I checked its just 2.5mm thinner but it does look a whole lot better. It now has improved handling of attachments and what really makes it for me, an integrated 2 megapixel camera.

Everything else is pretty much the same. Quadband (EGSM 850/900/1800/1900) connectivity, Symbian S60 3rd Edition, Bluetooth and Infrared.

The Nokia E61i supports corporate mobile email solutions such as Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email, Good Mobile Messaging, Mail for Exchange, Seven Mobile Mail, and BlackBerry Connect as well as most popular consumer email solutions.

Samsung launches movies to mobiles service

LONDON (Reuters) – Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd launched a service allowing its customers to buy or rent movies and TV series to download to their mobile phones.

The breadth of Samsung's offering, which includes over 500 blockbusters from top studios Warner Bros MTWX.N, Paramount and Universal, makes it competitive with other mobile media offerings from Apple Inc and Nokia Oyj.

Samsung Movies, a dedicated virtual store for Samsung customers, launches initially in Britain and Germany and will extend to other key European markets later in the year, Samsung said in a statement.

The service, which features films such as "The Dark Knight" and TV series including "E.R." and "Friends," will be compatible only with video-enabled Samsung phones such as its new Tocco Ultra Edition.

Samsung plans to expand the service to notebooks, MP3 and MP4 portable music players and Samsung TVs.

Samsung Movies will use technology from privately owned digital movie retailer Acetrax, which holds agreements with film studios and music labels.

Prices start at 2.49 pounds ($3.55) for a 24-hour rental or 4.99 pounds to buy a movie.

Samsung said it would double its titles to 1,000 by the end of the first quarter and again to 2,000 movies and TV shows by the end of June.

UK-based research firm CCS Insight said in a note: "The move is tangible progress in (Samsung's) convergence strategy and a first step in delivering consumer services to rival those from the likes of Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

Steve Ballmer on Thursday said Microsoft's smartphone strategy for the recession is to be a soup kitchen for the mobile market.

That apparently means not adding premium features in Windows Mobile like support for a capacitive touch screen – something he claims would make phones too expensive for phone manufacturers to make.

"We want to provide vendors with the ability to make Windows phones up and down the price scale," Ballmer said to Business Week editor Steven Adler at the McGraw-Hill media conference. All Things Digital's Peter Kafka paraphrased the chat here.

Ballmer said that while touch technology is important for the mobile market, he downplayed the need for capacitive touchscreens, a technology embraced by the iPhone, webOS, and Android OS.

"Windows Mobile 6.4 has touch on it. The way Apple does touch drives costs," Ballmer said. "The way they do it on the iPhone is not an inexpensive component. We'll do it in a way that you can afford to do it on most phones."

Ballmer said the sweet spot for smartphones is between $150 and $200 to make. Retailing a phone for $500 isn't going to fly in every market, he said.

(But then since Microsoft only provides the software, why not offer phone makers the choice of including more expensive technology?)

The Microsoft potentate also took a shot at Apple's prices in general. "No one's going to pay $500 more for a logo," he told his (reportedly gasping) audience.

Touching on the upcoming Microsoft retail stores, Ballmer said the retail outlets will serve as a "showcase" for Microsoft products rather than a direct source of sales like Apple stores.

Ballmer also said Microsoft is still open to discussing a search partnership with Yahoo's new chief, Carol Bartz. But Redmond has been stalking the search firm for ages no matter how spurned. "I'm sure when it's appropriate, we'll have a chance to sit down a talk," Ballmer said. Basically, Yahoo is going to need to get a restraining order to stop Ballmer serenading at its windows every evening.

The Apple iPhone:Windows smartphone

The iPhone is an internet-connected multimedia smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. with a flush multi-touch screen and a minimal hardware interface. The device does not have a physical keyboard, so a virtual keyboard is rendered on the touch screen instead.
The success of the Apple iPhone has meant handset makers have gone touchscreen crazy, with even BlackBerry launching a device for use with full-sized fingers. Owners of Windows-powered smartphones could only look on in envy, hampered by the menu-based interface of their own devices.

But things have changing and Taiwan’s HTC has made much of the running. HTC makes many of the mobile phone network own-brand smartphones on the market today, including O2’s XDA and T-Mobile’s MDA ranges, as well as Orange’s former SPV range.

These days, the company is also selling phones under its own brand in the UK and its latest device, the Touch HD, is the best attempt yet to crack the touchscreen market for the Windows user base. As with O2 and the iPhone, there is an exclusive network partner – Orange.

The touchscreen is as big as a playing field. At 3.8 inches across the diagonal, it is bigger even than the Apple iPhone’s lovely screen and touts an even more impressive resolution. With such a huge expanse of screen to play with, you would hope for something better than Windows Mobile’s menu-based interface and the Touch HD delivers. Sitting on top of Windows is HTC’s TouchFlo 3D interface, which uses finger gestures rather than stylus taps. I have previously talked about Touchflo 3D in my reviews of O2’s XDA Ignito and Serra smartphones and have found it lacking. However, Touchflo comes into its own on the Touch HD because of its considerably larger screen than those devices.

For those who haven’t seen Touchflo 3D, it works from a new home screen. Along the bottom is a ribbon of icons than you can slide left and right with your finger. These icons access the Touch’s major applications, such as the Opera web browser, email, music player, contacts and calendar. You can still access traditional Windows Mobile using the start menu at top left.

Inside the web browser, Touchflo 3D lets you zoom in and out using a double tap of the finger. However, there is no consistency to the gestures required. If you are looking at photos, zooming in and out requires a circular gesture.

I am still convinced that the iPhone does the best job here, thanks to its support for multi-finger gestures. There are downloads for Windows Mobile which emulate multi-touch but still cannot beat the very intuitive Apple interface.

That enormous and high resolution screen has some other advantages. YouTube addicts will be pleased to know that it works really well on the Touch HD; it is the first Windows Mobile-powered smartphone to really do it justice in the mobile setting.

The Touch HD's exterior is very minimal. There’s a 3.5mm audio jack and power button on the top edge, a discreet magnetic stylus holder on the right edge, flat volume buttons on the right and a mini USB socket on the bottom. The back face – which has a rubberised coating for robustness – is home to the phone’s 5meg autofocus camera. That camera spec makes the iPhone’s 2meg job look like a pinhole camera in comparison. The Touch’s microSD slot is hidden away inside the battery cover – an ideal location given that most people rarely swap their cards.

As for preinstalled software, the Touch HD comes with Office Mobile, offering miniature clones of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This is very useful if, like much of the corporate world, you use the full blown versions at the office.

WorldCard Mobile is another business traveller friendly inclusion. It allows you to take a photo of a business card and then import the contact information into your address book. It gets a little confused with unusual card layouts and small or compressed text but does a remarkably good job considering. If you are constantly on the road, this could be a real timesaver.

Dell's lunched thinest laptop on sale

Computer producer Dell has launched what it is calling the thinnest laptop of the world.

The Adamo weighs 1.8kg and is 1.64cm thick, making it thinner, but heavier, than Apple's MacBook Air.

A spokesman for Dell told the BBC that the Adamo was a "fashion statement" and that it was the first in a variety of luxury laptops from the firm.

The Adamo goes on sale at the end of the month, with a basic 1.2GHz Intel Core2D processor retailing at £1649.

Dell's marketing director, David Clifton said, "This wasn't a play against one particular brand," he also said, "This was about making a stylish product that's high in design and craftsmanship."

Apple began a new operating system for its popular iPhone stage Tuesday aimed at keeping the smart phone ahead of a pack of opponents who also are looking to use software to close the remoteness.

The iPhone “OS 3.0”, which will work on iPhones and the iPod Touch, contains more than 100 developments and will be existing this summer. The OS also will feature improved calendar and stock apps and a new voice memo program.

The more profound changes, however, involve updated tools for developers. Apple released a beta software development kit for the iPhone OS 3.0 that includes much more access to the core system, giving code writers the power and flexibility to create more robust programs.

A new push notification system allows developers to send alerts to users for apps that are not actively running. A peer-to-peer function allows designers to link two iPhones via Bluetooth for multiplayer gaming or information sharing. Developers also can enable payments inside their apps so users can buy new updates and items.

Some hoped-for improvements like voice-dialing, video and Adobe Flash support, however, were not included in the update. IPhone tethering, which allows the phone to be used as a 3G wireless modem, has been enabled but its use will be left up to operators. Presented iPhone users will be able to get the updated operating system for free; iPod Touch owners will have to pay $9.95 for the new software.

While the original iPhone wowed users with its elegant user interface and applications, the opening of the system to outside developers in July made the platform even more attractive to consumers. By the end of 2008, Apple had sold more than 30 million iPhones and iPod Touches, and users have downloaded more than 800 million applications in eight months.

That fast-growing mobile market continues to draw developers eager to cash in.

Seth Sternberg, co-founder of instant messaging site Meebo, unveiled the company's first IM app for the iPhone on Tuesday. He said the company was waiting for the push notification feature to be enabled before it launched its program.

"I think the new OS will absolutely accelerate developer adoption of Apple's iPhone platform," Sternberg said.

That continued developer momentum is key to Apple's future success, said analysts who attended the media briefing. As competitors such as Research in Motion, Nokia, Google, Microsoft and Palm prepare to start up mobile application stores, Apple needs to stay ahead by giving developers plenty of reasons to keep building off its operating system, said Nathan Brookwood, a market research analyst and consultant with Insight 64.

Brookwood said Apple appears more than up to the challenge.

"This is awesome stuff," he said. "It not only unleashes creativity but does it in a consistent way. Apple is putting more distance between itself and the competition because of its user interface and the large number of apps."

Apple shares closed up $4.24, or 4.44 percent, to end the day at $99.66.

Nokia continues to increase cost-efficiency and adapt to market situation

As part of its previously announced plans to increase cost-efficiency and adapt to the market situation, Nokia today announced further actions it is taking in Devices and Markets units as well as in its Corporate Development Office and global support functions. Nokia plans to scale sales, marketing and technology management to match the pruned portfolio and global consumer demand; address the marketing and other activities that will no longer be integral following the Symbian acquisition; streamline the Devices R&D organization; and increase efficiency in certain global support functions.

Altogether these plans will affect approximately 1 700 employees globally. Where applicable, Nokia will start consultations with employee representatives about these plans.

All of these measures are part of Nokia's previously announced plans to adjust business operations and cost base in accordance with market demand and safeguard future competitiveness. Nokia continues to seek savings in operational expenses, looking at all areas and activities across the company.

Nokia N97 gets big thumbs up

New York, USA - According to Mark over at the TheNokiaBlog, getting some hands-on time with the new Nokia N97 made him “happier than a fat kid in a candy store”. As well as chirping his knowledge live from the Nokia Store in New York, Mark has written a full post giving his (second) first impressions with the device (he’d played with it previously when it was first announced).

As is the way with these things, the N97 is evolving rapidly before it launches later this year and the version Mark got to play with, although still a prototype was a big development over the version at the declaration in December. What’s more he’s still in love with it. (Disclosure, I have to admit, I am too - it’s the first device since the N95 where I would actually sell some prized property to get my hands on one).

Some tourist attractions from Mark’s hands-on include:

Having a physical keyboard/touchscreen combination was great for web browsing

The angled display makes it very convenient to watch videos or slideshows on a flat surface

Using the touchscreen to change camera settings is easy and much faster than going through the menus with a d-pad

On a less positive note, Mark noticed a delay in transitioning websites from landscape to portrait mode, but we have to remember that we’re looking at prototype here so things like that are most likely still being worked on.

One of the most anticipated devices of 2009, the Nokia N97 is destined to find a place in plenty of pockets when it launches - I know it’ll certainly be my next device (sorry E71, but your time is coming to an end). Thing I’m looking forward to the most? I think it has to be the homescreen/touchscreen stuff. There’s clearly been a lot of work and thought gone into this and as I personally move more of my life into “the cloud” it makes sense to be able to admission that stuff in the way the N97 will make easy me to.

Sony Ericsson Idou As Smart Phone

The Idou is a metal cased smartphone, announced by Sony Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain on the 15th of February 2009. It has been labelled as the company's iPhone killer, and is scheduled to be released sometime in the second half of the year.

The focus of the phone is the high quality playback of music and video, as well as photography. It will be the first phone in the world to have a 12-megapixel camera . This is located on the back of the phone, behind a slider and features a Xenon flash. On the side of the phone, there is a shutter button, and a button which allows you to switch between still and video modes. Next to this is a rocker switch for zooming in and out. Also on this side is a button for playback of photos or video. The other side of the phone has a sliding lock button and a covered slot for a MicroSD card.

Types:
There are two different types of RAM: DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) and SRAM (Static Random Access Memory). The two types differ in the technology they use to hold data, with DRAM being the more common type. In terms of speed, SRAM is faster. DRAM needs to be refreshed thousands of times per second while SRAM does not need to be refreshed, which is what makes it faster than DRAM. DRAM supports access times of about 60 nanoseconds, SRAM can give access times as low as 10 nanoseconds. Despite SRAM being faster, it's not as commonly used as DRAM because it's so much more expensive. Both types of RAM are volatile, meaning that they lose their contents when the power is turned off.

Mr David Venn, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vodafone Ghana, who made the projection at a meeting with Togbe Afede XIV, Paramount Chief of the Asogli State, in Ho on Saturday, said all existing 21 transmission towers would be strengthened and another 63 added throughout the region.

Mr Venn said Vodafone, which bought majority shares of Ghana Telecom last year, was expected to complete its transition with a stronger technical capacity and human resource base to offer clients excellent services associated with Vodafone worldwide.
He said Vodafone would increase fixed lines and access to high speed internet service in the region in the coming months.

Mr Venn donated GH¢3,000.00 to the Asogli Educational Fund and expressed interest in replicating in Ghana, a project of research and documentation of cultural practices of the people of Zambia his company supported, while in the East African country.

Developed by Agilent Technologies and introduced to the world in late 1999, the optical mouse actually uses a tiny camera to take 1,500 pictures every second. Able to work on almost any surface, the mouse has a small, red light-emitting diode (LED) that bounces light off that surface onto a complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor.

The CMOS sensor sends each image to a digital signal processor (DSP) for analysis. The DSP, operating at 18 MIPS (million instructions per second), is able to detect patterns in the images and see how those patterns have moved since the previous image. Based on the change in patterns over a sequence of images, the DSP determines how far the mouse has moved and sends the corresponding coordinates to the computer. The computer moves the cursor on the screen based on the coordinates received from the mouse. This happens hundreds of times each second, making the cursor appear to move very smoothly.

India mobile market defies gloom

NEW DELHI (AFP) – Amidst all the economic gloom, one business is still booming -- India's mobile phones -- thanks to the world's lowest call rates driven by fierce competition among cellular operators, experts say.

And while economists forecast a sharp slowdown in India's economic growth, no downturn is seen in the mobile market, which added a record 15.4 million wireless users in January -- the biggest monthly growth ever, according to the latest official data.

"India represents a unique mobile market where competition is the highest and the tariffs are the lowest," T.V. Ramachandran, head of the Cellular Operators Association of India, told AFP.

And it's not just affluent Indians who are buying phones in the world's fastest growing cellular market -- India outstripped China last April.

Most of the growth has been driven by labourers, maids, drivers and other lowly paid people in cities and increasingly in rural areas as innovative marketing has made phoning cheap enough for some of the poorest pockets.

"One of the biggest factors in this growth has been affordability both in terms of handset and tariff plans," said Girish Trivedi, a senior analyst at consultancy Frost & Sullivan.

Customers can pay less than two cents for a call and 13 dollars for a new mobile handset. Second-hand ones can cost far less.

For many, mobile phones mean their livelihood.

Sixty-two-year-old house painter Akshaye Jha runs his two-man business in New Delhi from his mobile phone.

"It means people can get in touch with me. I get more jobs," said Jha.

"The mobile has become a device for the masses... an agent of change," transforming ways of communicating and doing business, Ramachandran said.

People are also buying phones even when they don't need them for work.

Munshi, a security guard, never learnt how to read numbers and gets other people to dial. He keeps his handset in his breast pocket and starts with surprise when it rings with a bouncy Hindi pop tune.

"It keeps me in touch with my family in the village," he smiles after getting a call from a nephew.

In rural areas, meanwhile, people are snapping up phones at an ever quicker pace as mobile firms aggressively roll out networks, sharing costs of infrastructure to reach far-flung areas quickly and cheaply, experts say.

Farmers are using mobile phones to call other farmers to find out the market price for crops like rice, fruit and coconuts.

Market players say tumbling stock markets and property prices are not stopping many poor Indians signing up for phones as they don't own shares or real estate and are not being hit.

"The people in rural India are not being affected by the global crunch," Sanjay Gupta, chief marketing officer of Bharti Airtel, India's leading cellular provider, said in an interview.

India's "mobile revolution" is still mainly seen in the cities, but the real prize for phone companies is the vast rural market, where nearly 70 percent of the 1.1-billion-strong population live, analysts say.

By the end of January, 34.5 percent of the population owned a telephone, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said.

But those figures distort the picture, with 66 percent of people in cities owning a phone compared to around nine percent in rural areas, says Frost & Sullivan.

"The next addition of subscribers will come from rural regions," said consultant Trivedi. The government calls the rural market the "next accelerator" for mobile growth.

Total wireless connections stand at 362.30 million, up from 233.63 million a year earlier. Combined with fixed line users, the country now has over 400 million telephone connections.

"With aggressive rollout targets by operators... the trend of new subscribers will continue," said Trivedi.

The Cellular Operators' Association expects 525 million mobile subscribers by 2010, rising to 740 million by 2012.

Nokia 5800 music mobile is comming

Technical problems with the U.S. version of the newly launched Nokia 5800 music mobile phone have led flagship stores in New York and Chicago to pull the model, according to PC World. For now, U.S. customers have to settle for a European version instead.
Nokia announced the new Nokia 5800 Xpress Music's availability in the United States Friday. Positioned as a rival to Apple's iPhone, the phone is a music device with a touch-screen interface, priced at $399 before taxes and subsidies in the U.S.

But according to PC World, the U.S. launch has been interrupted by consumer complaints that the earpiece is not properly protected against moisture, which ruins the speaker. Users have also reported difficulties connecting to AT&T's 3G network, and many customers have reportedly already returned their phones.

The touchscreen 3G Nokia 5800, set to launch in North America later this month, will give the mobile world a pleasant surprise. This iPhone rival brings plenty of hardware goodies, but can it compete with Apple's crown jewel?

The 5800 will launch on February 26, and will be available in an unlocked version, which can be used on either AT&T's or T-Mobile's network, for $399. I've been using the Nokia 5800 as my primary phone for the past few days to see how well it performed--and how well it compares with my iPhone.

What struck me immediately about the Nokia 5800 is that it lacks external music controls--and it's supposed to be a music-centric handset. On its right side, you'll find SIM and memory card slots, with stereo speaker grills underneath. On the left side are volume controls, a sliding screen lock, and a camera shutter. At the top of the phone, there's a power/profile switching button, plus a microUSB slot and a standard 3.5mm audio jack. A pleasant surprise was the included stylus, housed at the bottom right corner of the handset's back.

One of Nokia's 5800 most important assets is located at the back of the phone. The 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera sports Carl Zeiss lens with dual LED flash (take that, iPhone). Nokia just upgraded 5800's firmware last night, adding geotagging for photos (using the built-in GPS antenna), among other features.

The 5800 features a 3.2-inch 16:9 aspect ratio touchscreen (360 x 640 pixels), which has three control keys underneath it: call, menu, and hang up. The front of the phone also has a secondary VGA camera for video calling. Above the touchscreen, there's a tiny touch sensitive area can be found that brings up five onscreen shortcuts for music, pictures, media sharing, movies, and Web.
